QNX Success Story- AXS Station
AXS InfoComm Pte Ltd (“AXS”) of Singapore creates innovative solutions and applications that combine the convenience of a service delivery network with dynamic multimedia.
As part of its business, AXS develops an Electronic Service Delivery Network (ESDN), a platform that provides a comprehensive range of access points and portal connectors to a host of web services and e-applications in Singapore.
The AXS Station is a multi-application transactional terminal that comes with a debit card (NETS), stored value card (CashCard) and credit card payment facilities. It allows you to make local and international calls, send a SMS message, email a picture postcard of yourself, access info-on-demand, pay bills/fines, purchase a movie ticket and perform a whole range of transactions using a one-stop public access terminal. Running on a high-speed ADSL broadband network, it operates 24 hours a day and is installed at strategic and high traffic locations. With more than 200 machines island-wide, processing over million worth of transactions monthly, the AXS Station network has grown to be the largest public broadband transactional terminal network in Singapore.
To operate a 24x7 network of self service terminals deployed all over the country, AXS needed an operating system that would reliably manage the kiosks’ complicated real-time functions. The company considered other operating systems, but only QNX met their requirements. “The last thing we want to see on a self service terminal is the Blue-Screen-of-Death”, said Mr. Eugene Chan, Chief Technology Officer, AXS.
Mr. Chan stated that when they were looking around for an embedded OS, there was no other OS that even came close to what QNX was offering. Not only in terms of its realtime performance and small footprint, but the main attraction was Photon. “This beautiful Windowing environment has just everything a GUI application needed, but without the fats of X-Windows. With its embedded nature, we were able to put our entire GUI application, with the OS and every required library into a 32MB partition, and with space to spare for daily logging and etc.” said, Mr. Chan.
We were very pleased that we selected QNX. The Photon feature allowed us to achieve our desired reliability levels, and enabled us to develop a very unique solution to handle hardware devices remotely through the use of embedded scripts in HTML codes.
